Arsenal

Arsenal were surprising losers at home at the weekend as Swansea left the Emirates with a 0-2 away victory. The defeat leaves the team in 10th place with 21 points and 5 points behind the Champions League places.

Wenger’s side have just 1 win in 5 now domestically and none in 3. A much changed side then lost midweek in Greece so confidence can’t be great at the club as they continue to slide down the table.

At home the loss to Swansea is their first in 4 games with 2 wins over QPR (1-0) and Tottenham (5-2). Fulham pushed the Gunners in a close one that ended 3-3 as most games here are producing a lot of goals.

4 of the last 6 games here have had 3 goals or more averaging over 4 goals a game! 4 of the 6 have also had both sides scoring as more often than not games here develop into shootouts and Wenger won’t be happy that his side can’t keep teams out.

West Brom

West Brom Albion lost to Stoke also at home at the weekend to slip into 5th place with 26 points. The side is going great guns at the moment but have stumbled lately and this game won’t be much easier for them.

Clarke’s side are on a 2 game losing run having lost at Swansea (3-1) the week before. It’s hard a big drop in form and we can’t forget the excellent run of 4 straight wins before hand.

Away from home it’s 1 loss in 3 (at Swansea) having won at Wigan (1-2) and Sunderland (2-4) before hand. The Wigan win was their first on the road in 5 as Albion are not the greatest travellers generally. Whether they can re-find their form at the Emirates remains to be seen?

The last 5 away games have had both sides scoring with 4 of the 5 going over 2.50 goals. In fact it’s 4 straight overs since the 1-1 at Villa and that was probably because of a red to Villa in the game.

Betting Verdict

The Gunners would normally be around 1.20-1.30 for a game against West Brom at home but because of their poor form we see a bigger 1.50 for this one.

I’m going to chance it that the hosts rediscover their home form and beat West Brom. Arsenal to win and over 2.50 goals in the match is evens and that’s much better than the 1.50 fixed market.

The visitors are always involved in overs on the road and we can’t back the hosts to shut anyone out at the minute. The pressure is on Wenger and I expect him to turn things around in this fixture.

The last 4 between these 2 have gone over 2.50 goals and given Albion’s 2 game losing run and the fact their back to back away wins came out of the blue. I’m happy to oppose them in a game that I see ending 2-1 or 3-1.

Arsene Wenger rested a number of key players during Arsenal’s 2-1 defeat at the hands of Olympiakos on Tuesday, but the Frenchman has revealed that both Lukas Podolski (hamstring) and Theo Walcott (calf) missed out through injury and will not return in time to face the Baggies.

Bacary Sagna (foot), Laurent Koscielny (thigh) and Andre Santos (abdominal) will all miss the clash, as will long-term absentee Abou Diaby (thigh), who is not expected to return until the end of December.

There is some good news for the hosts, however, as Tomas Rosicky – who had a fine game in Greece midweek – has returned to fitness and should feature in the starting line-up.

Steve Clarke told reporters last week that Ben Foster could face further surgery on his groin, in which case he could face another 10 days out of action. But, Billy Jones and Boaz Myhill are both set to return to fitness after suffering from a bug that spread through the players during the week.

  • Arsenal are without a win in their last four matches in all competitions.
  • The Gunners have taken just six points from their last six matches.
  • Mikel Arteta (pictured, right) has the best pass success rate in the Premier League, with an average of 93% of his passes reaching their target.
  • The hosts currently boast the highest rate of possession in the top-flight, averaging 59.9% per game.
  • West Brom have won two of their last three away from home.
  • However, the Baggies have beaten Arsenal just once in their last nine attempts.
  • The vistors have benefitted this season from a variety a goal threats, as Shane Long and Romelu Lukaku have both netted five, Peter Odemwingie four and James Morrison three.
  • On average, the visitors cross the ball just 18 times in each game – less than any other side in the league.
